Russ,

This year marks a quarter-century of collaboration between TechLink and the U.S. Department of Defense! We're excited to share a look at our history of collaboration and innovation through tech transfer.

Plus, read about new, quick-to-assemble modular buildings available to license from the DOD. As communities across the Southeast recover from hurricanes Helene and Milton, these inventions highlight ways we can better protect infrastructure from storms and support emergency housing needs.

In 1999, TechLink became the first authorized National Partnership Intermediary for the DOD.

Since then, we’ve played a crucial role in innovation nationwide by facilitating licensing agreements for world-changing technologies. From life-saving medical solutions to clean energy catalysts, TechLink has helped DOD labs around the nation transfer inventions from minds to market.

Thanks to the companies that trust us to help them license government inventions, our impact has expanded each year, contributing to national security and economic growth. With over 2,000 tech transfer agreements facilitated, and more happening all the time, TechLink ensures private sector companies can partner with DOD labs to bring fresh ideas to life.

As we celebrate 25 years of working with the DOD, we’re reflecting on some of the most significant moments along our journey. Watch the video below for a brief trip through our history.

Double-Roof Protection System

With cities and towns across the nation facing the fallout of extreme weather, an Army-invented double-roof protection system could change the way we protect communities from natural forces like tornadoes and hurricanes.

Initially designed as a blast barrier for military use, the inexpensive modular barrier can be configured in various ways to protect people and buildings. It may also have security applications, such as fortifying bank vaults.

Modular Shelter System

Army engineers have developed a modular shelter system that can be assembled in just 15 minutes — no building expertise or tools required.

With built-in power and climate control, the highly configurable system can be used for emergency shelters, temporary office space, outdoor events, and more.

Affordable, Relocatable Housing Structure

Where many temporary housing solutions are expensive and hard to construct, the Army has invented CUBE: a small wooden structure that can be assembled without special equipment in just a few hours.

At around $26 per square foot, the structure can be assembled and disassembled again and again, providing a temporary housing solution for refugees, homeless people, disaster victims, and others in need.

Navy Filtration System Decreases Toxic Pollution from Floods

Since 2020, FEMA has recorded 80 major flood disasters. Stormwater pollution is a hidden risk of flooding and can drive environmental damage, complicating infrastructure recovery long after waters recede.

Federal labs are bringing solutions to market to help prepare for increased flooding. One invention from the Navy quickly and cost-effectively removes toxic metals and solids from stormwater runoff at the industrial level, enabling municipalities to suppress pollution and more quickly restore clean water.

As the warming climate contributes to major flooding, clean water solutions will become increasingly vital. Learn more about federal labs' efforts to mitigate flooding hazards below.
